Les analystes techniques pensent que chaque facteur pertinent du marché est déjà pris en compte dans le prix de l'instrument. Ainsi, la seule chose qu'ils doivent analyser est le mouvement des prix.
Les prix sont toujours censés former et suivre des tendances, même au hasard. Il est plus probable qu'un prix poursuive une tendance passée plutôt que d'évoluer de manière erratique.
Les analystes techniques fondent leurs prévisions sur l'observation que l'histoire a tendance à évoluer en cycles et donc à se répéter. Ils attribuent les mouvements historiques des prix à psychologie du marché basée sur la peur ou l’euphorie. En essayant d’identifier ces emotions en analysant les modèles graphiques et en comprenant les tendances de mouvement, les analystes cherchent à prédire les mouvements futurs des prix à partir du sentiment du marché.
