Los analistas técnicos creen que todos los factores relevantes del mercado ya se cuentan en el precio del instrumento. Como tal, lo único que necesitan analizar es el movimiento de precios.
Siempre se espera que los precios se formen y sigan tendencias, incluso al azar. Es más probable que un precio continúe una tendencia pasada a que se mueva erráticamente.
Los analistas técnicos basan sus predicciones en la observación de que la historia tiende a moverse en ciclos y, por tanto, a repetirse. Atribuyen los movimientos históricos de precios a psicología del mercado asada en el miedo o la emoción. Al tratar de identificar estas émotions al analizar los patrones de los gráficos y comprender las tendencias de movimiento, los analistas buscan predecir los movimientos futuros de los precios a partir del sentimiento del mercado.
