Tandem Diabetes Care Inc. has revolutionized insulin delivery

Whilst living with diabetes in modern times is for the most part manageable, the two greatest challenges have been monitoring insulin levels for correct dosing and timely administration. Since diabetes is a chronic condition, treatment is a long-term process, meaning stress can accumulate over time, especially when fluctuations occur.

Using sophisticated technology and devices, Tandem has managed to automate the monitoring and administration process to a degree that greatly reduces the impact the illness has upon the patient’s daily routine.

Precision monitoring and tailored delivery

Tandem’s innovative products have ensured that the blood sugar ranges of those suffering from diabetes are neither too high nor too low – an issue that conventional treatments could not accurately or efficiently address without constant doctor trips. Patients who follow the Tandem protocol stay within the normal range for an average of 74% of the time.

An insulin pump pairs with a compatible CGM (continuous glucose monitoring) sensor to create a powerful automated insulin delivery system. The sensor predicts glucose levels up to 30 minutes ahead. Based on the sensor’s results, insulin levels in the pump are adjusted for optimal delivery.

Insulin Pumps

Tandem’s most notable products are its two automated insulin pumps, both powered by Control-IQ technology. Both require a prescription to buy. They include a pump button for bolus delivery, are capable of wireless software updates and are compatible with the Dexcom G6 and G7 sensors. They are designed for use with NovoLog or Humalog U-100 insulin:

Tandem Mobi System

One choice pump is the Tandem Mobi System. It is the smaller of the two pumps, easily wearable, and capable of holding up to 200 units of insulin. Users can control it via smartphone or smartwatch, though it is only compatible with iOS devices.

The phone app allows users to monitor and deliver bolus without touching the pump throughout the day. Making it a very discreet and popular choice among diabetics.

t:slim X2 Insulin Pump

Another choice is the t:slim XS Insulin Pump. This pump is slightly larger because it can hold up to 300 units of insulin but also because it has an inbuilt screen that allows users to monitor and control activity without the use of a secondary device such as a smartphone (though this is still an option for those who wish to utilise it). This pump is compatible with both Android and iPhone.

Tandem Diabetes Care Mobile Application

Tandem’s mobile app control makes them more than just a medical manufacturer. They support users through cutting-edge mobile and cloud-based applications, to help users view their therapy data and better manage their diabetes. The benefits of the app are additional control, visibility and shareability with healthcare professionals.

CGM sensors

As stated, the sensors are integral to the Tandem’s insulin delivery equation. Picture them as small electronic patches that stick to the skin. They look simple yet continuously and painlessly monitor Glucose levels, doing away with the old finger-prick tests. The website lists three main sensors:

Dexcom G6

The Dexcom G6 sensor is a continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) device designed to provide real-time glucose readings for people with diabetes. It integrates seamlessly with Tandem Diabetes’ insulin pumps, allowing for automatic insulin adjustments based on glucose data. The Dexcom G6 sensor measures glucose levels in the interstitial fluid every few minutes while worn on the skin, typically on the abdomen or upper arm.

It has a sensor lifespan of up to 10 days, is factory-calibrated with no fingerstick needed. This sends glucose readings to a receiver, smartphone, or insulin pump for added convenience.

Dexcom G7

The Dexcom G7 sensor features a smaller, more discreet design compared to previous models, making it more comfortable and easier to wear. The G7 sensor is also factory-calibrated, has a 10-day lifespan, and provides accurate glucose readings every five minutes. With its faster warm-up time, the G7 offers improved performance, delivering critical data through a smartphone, receiver, or pump for more effective diabetes management.

FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus

The FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus pairs specifically with the t:slim X2 Insulin Pump. The sensor is worn on the back of the upper arm, providing real-time glucose readings every minute. The FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus system includes optional real-time alarms that alert users to high or low glucose levels, enhancing proactive diabetes management. It has a lifespan of 15 days, which is more than the Dexcom sensors.

Control IQ technology

Control IQ technology is the backbone of Tandem’s insulin delivery devices. It takes the CGM values and uses them to predict what glucose levels will be 30 minutes ahead, then automatically assigns the ideal dosage to be delivered by the pump. This pre-emptive strategy helps Tandem’s patients avoid highs and lows, keeping them within normal ranges as far as possible.

Pricing

The official Tandem Diabetes Care website does not display pricing. However, customers can purchase products directly or through insurance, which likely affects the final cost.

History of Tandem Diabetes

Tandem Diabetes Care, Inc. is based in San Diego California. It was originally founded in 2006 under Phluid, Inc. by a team of engineers dedicated to creating more advanced insulin pumping solutions. The following year, Kim Blickenstaff joined as president and CEO, bringing his focus to market research-driven product development. Through interviews with over 4,000 insulin pump users and healthcare providers, the company designed its first device, the t:slim Insulin Pump. It was in 2008 that the company rebranded as Tandem Diabetes Care, Inc.

In 2016, Tandem ranked #39 on the Deloitte Fast 500 North America list. In 2018, the San Diego Union-Tribune named it a top workplace in San Diego.

February 2019 and Tandem announced that Kim Blickenstaff would transition to the newly created role of Executive Chairman of the board of directors, whilst John F. Sheridan, who was previously the COO, succeeded him as President and CEO, effective March 1, 2019.
